AS Roma Football Club

When being a fan means being a fan for life: this is a brief history of one of the most successful Italian Football Clubs and its incredible fan support.

AS Roma, which stands for "Associazione Sportiva Roma"" (Rome Sporting Association), is a professional football club that was formed on July 22, 1927.  AS Roma became a publicly traded company in 2000 and plays in the A series of football in Italy.  AS Roma has about 4 milion supporters world wide and is one of the most successful football clubs in Italy, with the highest number of awards:  3 series winds, 9 Italy Cup wins, and 2 Super Italy Cup wins.  In the last 10 years, Roma has finished the season 7 times in the top 3 of the Italian Soccer League and qualified them to play in the UEFA Champions League.

The symbol for AS Roma is the capitoline wolf, the symbol and history of the city of Rome.  The colors of the team and uniforms are a deep red (almost burgundy) and a rich yellow-orange.  Up until the 1996-1997 season, the jersey had a graphic of a black wolf with a red eye, however in 1997, the team received official permission from the City of Rome to use the picture of the wolf with the twins, who according to legend founded the city.

Over the 84 years since its founding, AS Roma has seen many famous coaches and professional athletes come and go, many of whom went on to play for the National. Under the management of the Sensi family, Roma was able to capture its third League season win under the guidance of Coach Fabio Capello and the undeniable leader of the team today Totti and at the time, Battistuta.  Under the Coach Luciano Spalletti, who in 2005 led the team to recond consecutive wins (11!), the team won both the Super Cup and the Italy Cup against Inter. After Spalletti, it was Coach Claudio Ranieri's turn, who in 2009 took the team all the way to the finals, finishing in 2nd place.

In 2010/2011, after only half a season with Ranieri, the team was entrusted to Coach Vincenzo Montella, a famous ex-player for Roma from the 3rd League season win. Under Montella, the team was able to finish 6th that season, clinching a spot for the Europe League competition. After scandal and bankruptcy, 2011 saw the end of the Sensi family leading the team, as the sold it to American businessman Thomas di Benedetto, who brought in a new coach, Luis Enrique. Unfortunately, the season didn't end as well as hoped, Luis left and Zeman, an ex-coach from AS Roma years ago, was asked to return for the new season.
