Description

The St Peter's Basilica is located in Vatican City. The construction of the basilica, built over St Peter's tomb, began in 324 by Emperor Constantine. The Basilica has been very popular over the centuries: it was here that, on Christmas Eve in the year 800, Charlemagne was crowned emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and until the beginning of 1300 masses of pilgrims flowed here to venerate the tomb of the Saint. In early 1500 Pope Julius II decided to entrust Donato Bramante the task of rebuilding St Peter's Basilica. He released a first draft, but the reconstruction finally began in 1547 according to a design by Michelangelo. The classical façade by Maderno, and several other parts were finished after Michelangelo's death. Today St Peter's Basilica, which can accommodate 20,000 people, is one of the largest religious buildings in the world (the dome reaches 136 meters high). Its interior, characterized by elaborate mosaics and famous works of art, such as Bernini's Canopy and the statue of the Pietà by Michelangelo.
