Description

Ponte Milvio is a bridge built in 110-109 BC by the censor Marcus Aemilius Scaurus connecting the left bank with the Cassia and Flaminia across the Tiber. In 312 the battle between Constantine and Maxentius took place in this very area. According to legend, Constantine had a vision: he saw "In hoc signo vinces" written in the sky, which encouraged him to win the battle. The arches of the bridge and the neoclassical style northern tower were built by Giuseppe Valadier. Today the bridge is famous for couples to put a lock on the center lamp of the bridge and throwing the keys into the Tiber as described in a famous novel. It was also for this reason that Ponte Milvio District became one of the most popular places for roman nightlife
