Description

Also known as Pons Aelius (Ponte Elio), Pons Hadriani (Bridge of Hadrian) or Bridge of the Castle, Sant'Angelo Bridge is one of the oldest and most famous bridges of Rome. Sant'Angelo Bridge was built in 136 AD to connect Rome to the Mausoleum of Hadrian, that later on became Sant'Angelo Castle. It's one of the most beautiful Roman buildings and since the Middle Ages was the most important route used by pilgrims to go to St Peter's Basilica. The bridge was built in "paperino", a volcanic rock widely used at the time, and then covered with travertine. It consists of five main arches, originally with stairs leading down to the river bank which were later destroyed to raise the banks of the Tiber River. During the Jubilee of 1450, the balustrade on the bridge gave out due to of the large influx of pilgrims and resulted in the deaths of many people. In 1535 Pope Clement VII placed the statue of St Peter and St Paul at the entrance of the bridge where they can still be seen today. Later Pope Clement IX built a new railing designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, above which were placed ten statues of angels bearing the symbols of the Passion of Christ, carved by Bernini's pupils under his direction. Of these sculptures of angels, only one is autographed by Bernini and has been placed in the church of Sant'Andrea delle Fratte.
