Walking across Sant'Angelo Bridge or along the banks of Tiber river you'll see Sant'Angelo Castle, built as a Mausoleum by Emperor Hadrian in 125 DC. At various times Sant'Angelo Castle had been used as a residence and sometimes fortress by Popes, as a jail and as renaissance house, but Sant'Angelo Castle has always maintained its particular shape. Castel Sant'Angelo has stood the test of time, through nearly 2,000 years of evolution and in Ancient Rome was one of the most imposing structures. Over the centuries that followed, Hadrian's Mausoleum was incorporated into the Aurelian Walls in 403 A.D. In 590 A.D it is said that the Archangel Michael appeared above the fortress to help the city of Rome escape from a devastating bout of plague. Today Sant'Angelo Castle has been transformed into a museum which hosts numerous collections of weapons, pottery and Roman sculptures. Visiting Castel Sant'Angelo you will find a long corridor that leads to a room where, according to legend, there are urns containing the ashes of the Roman emperors. From this room go up to the first terrace where you can see the original statue of the Archangel (1544) that adorns the eaves of the castle, by Raffaello da Montelupo. Among the other rooms we suggest you visit the Hall of Apollo and the private rooms of Clement VII.
