Description

The Temple of Hercules or Hercules Oleario is located inside the Boarium Forum and is one of the most characteristic roman monuments. It is a round temple of Greek design built in marble and completely encircled by a colonnade. The temple, built around the second century BC, is the oldest building of Rome made in marble and consists of a cylindrical cells, which opens to the east. The cells are surrounded by twenty pillars Corinthian capitals resting on a base formed in steps blocks of tuff. Unfortunately, the entire top has been lost and the roof is of modern times. Inside the temple, recently restored, are preserved interesting frescoes and paintings including a "Madonna and Child with Saints." To reach the Temple of Hercules you can take the subway (Line B) and get off at "Circo Massimo" or take the bus lines 95, 160, 170, 44, 716 and 781. The Mouth of Truth, one of the most visited attractions in Rome is only a short walk away.
