Description

The Trevi Fountain is the most famous and probably the most beautiful fountain in the city. This impressive monument dominates the small Trevi square located in the Quirinale district. The Trevi Fountain is located at the end of Aqua Virgo, an aqueduct constructed in 19 BC. Nicola Salvi created the large fountain in 1735 commissioned by Pope Clement XII. The sea inspired the scenery is dominated by a rocky cliff in the center where there is a statue of Poseidon driving a chariot in the shape of a shell pulled by two winged horses. The fountain is framed by a large rectangular and flowing swimming pool with rounded corners. Over the four Corinthian columns there are four smaller allegorical statues (from left to right): the "Abundance of Fruit", the "Fertility of the fields", the "Richness of Autumn" and the "Amenity of the gardens". The roman fountain is also well known for the iconic scenes between Anita Ekberg and Marcello Mastroianni in Federico Fellini's "La Dolce Vita". Walking along Via Veneto you will see a dedication to the great director by the city of Rome.
