Description

The People's Square is located at the intersection of three of the most important shopping streets of Rome: Via del Corso, Via del Babuino and Via di Ripetta. It is often the stage for political demonstrations, concerts and other entertainment performances. The name of the square comes from the latin word Populus (meaning poplars) because there was a grove of poplar trees in the area near Nero's tomb. The People's Square was redesigned by the architect Valadier who put four pools and an obelisk (23.9 meters high) at the centre of the square in the fourteenth century BC. This was the first obelisk to be transported to Rome at the time of Augustus to celebrate the victory over Egypt, and was originally placed in the Circus Maximus.
