Description

Spain's Square or Spanish Steps (Piazza di Spagna in italian) was inaugurated in 1725 for the Jubilee and is an incredible, almost magical square with a dramatic staircase leading up to the Church of Trinità dei Monti. The fountain, known as the 'Barcaccia'(boat), was commissioned by Pope Urbano VIII Barberini to Bernini (both the father and son) to commemorate the alliance with the King of France, whose coat of arms can be seen in Trinità dei Monti. The Spain's Square leads down onto several famous streets known for their luxury shopping on Via dei Condotti, Via Frattina and Via Borgognona, and antique shopping on Via del Babuino. Horse drawn carriages also wait at the bottom of the steps: another interesting way to tour the city! You can easily reach Piazza di Spagna by subway Line A stop "Spagna".
