St Peter's Square (in italian Piazza San Pietro) was designed by Bernini between 1656 and 1667, and commissioned by Pope Alexander VII. It is shaped like a large ellipse with a trapezoid on the top reaching towards St Peter's Basilica and enclosed by 284 Doric columns four rows deep (196m wide and 148m long). In 1950, a wider access road was made, Via della Conciliazione, enhancing the view of the majestic St Peter's Basilica. On the sides of the obelisks at the centre of the square, are two beautiful fountains by Bernini and Maderno. To get to St Peter Square you can take the subway (Metro Line A) stop at "Ottaviano", or take the bus n 62 (Via della Conciliazione), n 32, 81, 590, 49 and the tram n 19 (Piazza Risorgimento).
